Why Sifnos is a must-visit destination
Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Sifnos is a gem of the Cyclades archipelago, renowned for its unspoiled beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. Home to around 2,500 people, the island offers a perfect blend of traditional Greek charm through a number of picturesque villages adorned with white-washed houses, narrow winding streets, and iconic blue-domed churches. Sifnos is also a culinary paradise, famous for its unique local cuisine offered by both traditional tavernas and also more contemporary spots.
After spending 3 days on this stunning island, I’ve written this travel guide to highlight all of our favourite spots including, the best beaches, where to stay and what to eat.
Getting to Sifnos
By Ferry
Since there is no airport available, the most popular way to reach Sifnos is by sea. The island is well-connected by sea and a number of options are available.
From Athens
- Piraeus Port: Ferries to Sifnos depart regularly from Piraeus, Athens’ main port. The journey typically takes around 3 to 5 hours, depending on whether you choose a conventional ferry or a high-speed option. Ferries are operated by several companies, including Blue Star Ferries and SeaJets, providing flexibility in terms of departure times and travel experience.
From Other Cycladic Islands
- Inter-island Ferries: Sifnos is also connected to other Cycladic islands, such as Milos, Paros, Mykonos, and Santorini. These inter-island ferries offer a convenient way to island-hop and explore the beauty of the Cyclades. Travel times vary, with some routes taking as little as 1 hour.
By Air
While Sifnos does not have its own airport, travellers can fly into nearby islands and continue their journey by ferry.
Via Milos or Paros
- Milos National Airport: The nearest airport to Sifnos is on Milos, which has regular flights from Athens. From Milos, it’s a short ferry ride to Sifnos, making this a practical option for those who prefer to minimize their sea travel time.
- Paros National Airport: Another nearby option is Paros, which also has flights from Athens and other European cities during the peak season. Ferries from Paros to Sifnos are frequent and take about 2 hours.
By Helicopter
For a luxurious and expedient travel experience, helicopter transfers are available from Athens International Airport or other Cycladic islands like Mykonos and Santorini. Helicopter services offer a swift and scenic journey to Sifnos, providing stunning aerial views of the Aegean Sea and Cycladic islands. This option is ideal for travellers seeking convenience and comfort, with flight durations typically ranging from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the departure point.
By Private Yacht
For those seeking a more luxurious and flexible travel experience, chartering a private yacht is an excellent option. The Aegean Sea offers ideal conditions for sailing, and numerous companies provide yacht rental services. This option allows you to explore Sifnos and nearby islands at your own pace, enjoying the secluded beaches and hidden coves that are otherwise inaccessible.
Best Time to Visit Sifnos
Choosing when to visit will depend on your preferences for weather, activities, and crowd levels. We visited in early June and would say that it was perfect for us. It wasn’t unbearably hot yet but still warm enough to enjoy the beaches and there were virtually no crowds anywhere we went. If hiking is on your agenda, I would suggest starting early in the morning when temperatures are still below the mid-day 30°C (95°F).
Spring (April – June):
- Weather: Mild temperatures, lush landscapes.
- Activities: Ideal for hiking, exploring villages.
- Crowds: Lighter compared to summer peak.
Summer (July – August):
- Weather: Hot and sunny, perfect for beach activities.
- Activities: Swimming, festivals, vibrant atmosphere.
- Crowds: Busy; book accommodations, ferries and certain restaurants early.
Autumn (September – October):
- Weather: Warm temperatures, pleasant for outdoor activities.
- Activities: Hiking, cultural events, quieter beaches.
- Crowds: Decrease after August, more relaxed atmosphere.
Winter (November – March):
- Weather: Cool, some rain, off-season for tourism.
- Activities: Quiet exploration, local experiences.
- Crowds: Very few tourists, some businesses may close.
Where to Stay in Sifnos
Although a relatively small island, there are a number of accommodation options in Sifnos, from sea-side hideaways to upscale boutique hotels. Here’s a guide to some of the best places to stay, including a personal recommendation from our own stay at Verina Terra.
Apollonia:
- Description: Apollonia is the capital of Sifnos and offers a central location with easy access to shops, restaurants, and nightlife.
- Accommodations: You’ll find a range of options from cozy guesthouses to boutique hotels. It’s a convenient base for exploring the island.
Kastro:
- About: Kastro is a historic village perched on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, known for its traditional charm and narrow alleys.

Faros:
- About: Faros is a picturesque fishing village known for its relaxed atmosphere and traditional tavernas.

Platis Gialos:
- Description: Platis Gialos boasts one of the island’s most popular beaches, known for its golden sands and crystal-clear waters.
- Accommodations: Beachfront hotels and family-run guesthouses cater to sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts.
Verina Terra (Where We Stayed):
For our 3-night stay we stayed at Verina Terra. The hotel is located mere meters away from the famous Platis Gialos beach. The rooms are stylishly designed and offer all the required comforts for a relaxing stay. The rooms open up to outdoor terraces overlooking the surrounding hills and the hotel’s vegetation filled grounds. Breakfast is served next to the outdoor pool area every morning offering a delicious variety of sweet and savoury dishes.
Verina Astra (on our wishlist)
Another option we looked into is the infamous Verina Astra. Set on steep hill overlooking the Aegean sea, Verina Astra offers a number of luxurious suites with private terraces some with their own infinity pools. When we were making our reservations, the hotel was already booked a few months before, so our recommendation is to book well in advance. Otherwise if you’d still like to visit and fancy a sublime dining experience you can also book a table at their restaurant, Bostani.

Sifnos Pottery
In Sifnos, pottery holds the same cultural significance as sunsets in Santorini and nightlife in Mykonos. The island’s pottery heritage dates back centuries, reflecting its artistic and cultural significance. One of the most famous ceramicists on the island is Atsonios Handmade Ceramics. The family have been producing handmade ceramics since 1870 in a workshop located in Vathi beach. A trip to the workshop is highly recommended to get a glimpse of the traditional pottery-making of the island.

Where to Eat in Sifnos
Best Restaurants we visited in Sifnos
One thing we loved about Sifnos is the diverse amount of dining options. Below are some spots we tried and loved.
Tsikali
Tsikali is a must try traditional taverna situated right by the water in Vathi Beach. We ate lunch here and all the dishes were delicious. A standout was the Revithada, a typical local chickpea stew.
Pelicanos
Another beachfront spot, but this time offering more contemporary gourmet dishes. The menu takes its inspiration from typical Sifnian dishes but presents them with a twist. The standout here for us was definetely the Tarama.
Omega3
If there is one restaurant that kept showing up during our research it was definitely Omega3. Expectations were quite high for this spot and if you’re in the mood for seafood a visit here is a must. All the dishes were creative whilst still highlighting Aegean flavours.
Bostani
We visited Bostani for a celebratory dinner and it was nothing short of perfect. Located in Verina Astra, it offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. The outdoor space is designed to perfection without being overly done. The menu takes its inspiration from Greek cuisine and each dish we tried was truly delicious. If you’re looking for a refined dining experience, Bostani should be on your list.
Loggia
Whilst technically not a restaurant, Loggia is most probably one the most scenic wine bars we’ve ever been. It is located in Kastro overlooking Seralia beach. Loggia Wine Bar’s wine list emphasizes low intervention, organic, biodynamic, and traditional Greek wines. It features over 100 wine labels with 12 that can be sampled by the glass. Loggia is a must visit if you’d like the chance to appreciate Greek wines with a superb view.

Practical Tips for Visiting Sifnos
Transportation on the Island
Renting a Car or Scooter
- To explore Sifnos at your own pace, consider renting a car or scooter. This provides flexibility to visit remote beaches and charming villages. Several rental agencies are available in Apollonia and the port town of Kamares, however if you’re visiting during the busier months, we’d recommend booking online prior to arrival. We rented a small car from Sifnos Travel and were please with their service.
Public Transportation Options
- Sifnos also has a reliable bus service that connects major villages and beaches. Buses run frequently during the summer, making it a convenient option for those who prefer not to drive.
Essential Travel Tips
Language and Currency
- Greek is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. The currency is the Euro (€), and ATMs are available in major villages.
Packing Essentials for Sifnos
- Pack light, breathable clothing, sun protection, and comfortable shoes for hiking. Don’t forget swimwear for the beautiful beaches and a light jacket for cooler evenings.
