‘MANNA’ is a historic building, a former sanatorium turned into a luxury, 5-star boutique Mountain Resort, operating all year round.
It is located in Arcadia, in the heart of the Peloponnese, just 2 hours away from Athens (190klm), at an altitude of 1200m, surrounded by the virgin fir forest of Mount Mainalo, an area of infinite natural beauty and pureness. It is among picturesque cobble stone villages of captivating beauty and authenticity, next to Vytina, Dimitsana, Andritsaina and Karytaina, and the crystal clear Lousios River, where legend has it that Zeus took his first bath as a newborn.
It is listed historical building, dating back to 1927, built by Anna Mela Papadopoulou, an aristocrat who gave up her bourgeois lifestyle and devoted her whole life and immense belongings to the treatment of the wounded soldiers and patients with tuberculosis. Anna Mela received several honors and the name that speaks to the heart, of ‘MANA’, the ‘Mother’ of the Soldier, due to her extensive philanthropism and total devotion.
MANNA worked as a sanatorium until 1938, when penicillin was introduced as a treatment. The abundance of fresh air at the location, due to the altitude and the dense woodland, made it ideal for rehabilitation. The historical significance of the building along with the natural beauty and architectural excellence makes MANNA unique in Greece and in Europe.
It is an emblematic building of Neoclassical influences, originally built by local stone workers, it is made of grey limestone, combined with wood and mosaic preserved floors, all locally sourced.
The building, which has been classified as a preserved monument, has now been revived by acclaimed architects and interior designers K-Studio and Monogon Office of Architecture with total respect to its original architecture and past, thus creating MANNA.
